The Importance of Housing to the Safety and Stability of Native Children and Families
Please join the Tribal Safe Housing Center, a project of the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, for a discussion on the intersecting challenges Native survivors and their children face as they attempt to maintain or secure safe, stable housing, a paramount component for a family’s health and well-being. Many families impacted by violence have to relocate for safety or become at risk of losing their housing in response to abuse and economic instability. Families involved with the child welfare system are often tasked with finding what that system considers to be safe housing, generally separate from a partner who has been abusive.
We’ll discuss how access to safe, stable housing options both prevents and mitigates the negative impacts of violence and abuse, and explore current initiatives, including A Home for Every Child, and other advocacy strategies aiming to shift systems and practices toward building safer housing opportunities for families.
