Promoting Safety for Our Elders Through Culturally Responsive Strategies
This session will explore the critical issue of elder abuse in Tribal communities, with a focus on culturally responsive strategies for recognition and intervention. Participants will learn about the unique challenges and strengths within Tribal Nations when addressing elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The presentation will highlight the development of Tribal Elder Protection Teams (TEPTs) and the creation of Elder Protection Team Codes to formalize collaborative response efforts. Additionally, we will discuss the role and development of Tribal Adult Protective Services (APS), including how they differ from state APS systems, how the Tribal APS and state APS can work together, and how they can be structured to honor sovereignty, culture, and community-based approaches to safety and support. Participants will leave with practical tools and resources to support or strengthen elder protection efforts in their Tribal communities.
