Earth Day 2019—Protect our Species

Earth Day 2019—Protect our Species

Earth Day began 49 years ago to draw attention to the destructive impact of 150 years of industrial development.  As Indigenous People we are instinctively aware of our sacred connections to Earth Mother, and the connectedness of all life on this precious planet.  As our great leaders have stated, “the earth does not belong to us, we belong to the earth.”  We are guardians and protectors of all life on this planet.

Please join the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center in celebrating Earth Day 2019 and “Protect Our Species.”  If we do not act now, extinction may be humanity’s most enduring legacy.  All living things are sacred and have a unique spiritual value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species.

Earth Day Network is asking people to join their “Protect our Species” campaign. The goals are to:

  • Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.
  • Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats.
  • Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values.
  • Encourage individual actions such as adopting a plant-based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use.

And, as the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, we are call on everyone to:

  • Honor, respect and value all women and their children for the hurt of one woman is the hurt of all women; and

Work to end all forms violence; for the violence against Earth Mother is directly connected to violence against women, who are the foundation of our families and the heartbeat of our communities.
