Specialty Institute | Weaving Together: Strength-Based Trauma-Informed Approaches to Support Survivors of Domestic Violence with Mental Health Challenges

Tuesday, January 12, 2021 to Thursday, January 14, 2021

Event Type:

Victims/survivors of domestic violence with mental health issues face significant safety and confidentiality challenges. Domestic violence can have a profound negative impact on a persons’ mental well-being, which can lead to depression, anxiety, and even suicide. Domestic violence survivors are often reluctant to reach out for help out of fear of the stigma attached to individuals that have suffered abuse, being judged, or not being believed. People with pre-existing mental health issues are highly vulnerable and often targeted for abuse, and are even more likely to be reluctant to seek help.
The purpose of this NIWRC Specialty Institute is to advance the discussion in our communities to improve responses to domestic violence and mental health concerns.

This Specialty Institute will offer:

  • trauma and culturally-informed approaches to respond to survivors of domestic violence with mental health issues
  • brief overviews on mental health and domestic violence and the ways they converge and intersect
  • practical applications on what works and what doesn’t through the lens of survivors with lived experience
  • opportunities to identify common threads that are woven throughout these two issues and steps we can take to enhance our knowledge and understanding
  • education that will improve the work we do and strengthen our advocacy to address the violence in our communities for survivors with mental health challenges
